With gyms closed for a while recently, many of us joked about frequent trips to the fridge while working from home. But all jokes aside, keeping our health and fitness a top priority is crucial. If we’re not in good health, even simple tasks and achieving goals in different parts of our lives can be tough.
Even though gyms are starting to reopen, it’s important to remember that you can stay fit without a gym membership. I’ve paused my gym subscription and found different ways to stay active. Here are some options to keep you fit without needing a gym.
CREATE A REGULAR WORKOUT SCHEDULE
Just like I plan my work and freelance tasks, I also set a regular workout schedule. I usually exercise in the mornings or during lunch breaks, but sometimes in the evenings with my husband. Without a gym membership, you have the freedom to plan your workouts around your own schedule. If you like group fitness classes, create your own routine and put it in your calendar. Being consistent is key.
Writing down my daily workout goals in my planner helps me stay committed. On days when motivation is low, committing to just 20 minutes of exercise can make a big difference. Often, just starting the workout gets me going.
USE FREE WORKOUT VIDEOS AND APPS
To build muscle and tone up, I often use free workout videos on YouTube. There are tons of great resources and tips available for free. I also use the Nike+ Training Club app, which offers personalized training sessions that you can do anywhere, anytime. The app has diverse training programs led by Nike Master Trainers and pro athletes, allowing you to tailor a weekly program based on your schedule and fitness goals.
INVEST IN BASIC FITNESS EQUIPMENT
One downside of not going to the gym is missing out on the variety of equipment. However, I make use of simple equipment I already have, like a resistance band, medicine ball, and speed rope for quick cardio sessions.
APPRECIATE RUNNING
Running is one of the simplest and cheapest ways to stay fit, but it’s never been my favorite. I’m considering alternatives like dancing or Zumba for cardio. However, having the right shoes can make running more comfortable and enjoyable, especially for beginners.
KEEP MOVING
The easiest way to stay fit without a gym membership is to just keep moving. I use a Fitbit to track my activity, but a pedometer app on your phone works too. I aim for at least 10,000 steps a day and often try to exceed that goal. Walking, playing outdoor sports, or biking are great ways to stay active. The key is to keep moving and stretch regularly.
As shown, there are plenty of ways to stay fit without needing a gym membership. Whether you choose to go to a gym or work out at home is entirely up to you.
