ComScore announced on Sunday that early December has shown strong online spending this year, which is usually a quieter time for U.S. holiday shopping. During the first week of December, consumers spent about $5.9 billion online, marking a 15% increase from the previous year. Events like Cyber Monday and Black Friday played a significant role, with Cyber Monday hitting a record $1.2 billion in sales.
Initially, there were concerns that these high early sales might lead to a slowdown in early December, but this wasn’t the case. Instead, recent statistics suggest that the holiday shopping season could end on a high note.
The upcoming week is usually the busiest for online retailers. For example, eBay introduced the term Green Monday back in 2007 to describe the Monday of the second week of December, which is often one of the busiest online shopping days. For six years in a row, Green Monday has been one of the top spending days during the holiday season.
