As Valentine’s Day gets closer, and with the President’s Day weekend coming up, I started thinking about affordable weekend getaways in southern California. Eric and I love going on these budget-friendly mini-vacations. Since we don’t have kids yet, we can easily plan spontaneous trips, leaving our beloved pet with our parents.
We always aim to get the most fun out of these short weekend trips, making sure it feels like a mini-vacation even if we have to return to work by Monday. Here are some affordable getaway ideas you might consider in southern California:
**San Diego**
San Diego has so much to offer—great nightlife, high-end dining, relaxing spas, and a chill beach vibe. Spend a day wandering through Old Town State Park, known as the birthplace of California. Don’t miss the local Mexican restaurants for their huge margaritas and fresh tortillas. For a fun night out, the Gas Lamp District’s many bars and restaurants are fantastic. Day trips to the famous San Diego Zoo, Safari Park, or the USS Midway Museum are also well worth it.
**Temecula**
A weekend wine tasting in Temecula can feel as rejuvenating as a longer vacation. This charming area, often considered a smaller version of Napa Valley, offers a laid-back wine tasting experience that both newbies and wine enthusiasts will enjoy. After a day of tastings, you might want to call it an early night, but there’s also nightlife in Old Town Temecula, hot air balloon rides, and spa experiences at South Coast Winery.
**Los Angeles**
Though the city’s traffic and pollution can be a turn-off, playing tourist in Los Angeles for a weekend can be a lot of fun. Spend a day exploring Hollywood and Highland, take a tour of celebrity homes, watch a TV show taping, and maybe grab a cocktail at a famous spot like The Standard or Roosevelt Hotel.
**Las Vegas**
Living in southern California, you’re likely familiar with the thrills of Las Vegas. To avoid the Friday rush, consider leaving work a bit early.
**Big Bear**
Get away from the city chaos and relax in Big Bear. Whether you enjoy skiing in the winter or hiking in the summer, the mountains there are always inviting.
**Catalina Island**
For a great deal, look for packages that include both transportation and lodging. Catalina Island offers a unique experience, reminiscent of southern California’s version of Martha’s Vineyard.
**Santa Ynez Valley**
If you’ve already visited Temecula, head to Santa Ynez Valley next. With numerous wineries in Los Olivos and Solvang, it is an extension of the Santa Barbara wine country.
**Santa Barbara**
Santa Barbara is a peaceful town perfect for a relaxing getaway. Rich in history and boasting a lively downtown, it promises a delightful experience.
