If you’re a blogger, you probably started by writing down your thoughts and hoping someone would read them. In the beginning, your audience was likely just family and friends. But with time and lots of networking, your blog started to grow. After a year or two, you might even have started making some decent money from it. What began as a hobby turned into a passion, along with financial rewards, giving you a real sense of accomplishment. At this point, it’s important to think about the tax implications and consider hiring an accountant who understands blogging finances.
Over the summer, I sought out an accountant, but one of them didn’t see much growth potential in my modest earnings. She brushed off the significance of my blogging income’s tax implications, which was discouraging since I was determined to grow my blog. So, I decided not to hire her. Finding an accountant who took blogging seriously was a real challenge.
Then I went to a bloggers’ conference this summer. There, I met an accountant and a bookkeeper who had experience working with a well-known blogger. They understood blogging income and its potential, so I decided to hire them. It was a great decision. Here are some tips on what to look for when hiring an accountant as a blogger:
Find someone who understands the blogging world and its income potential. You don’t want an accountant who thinks blogging is just a passing trend.
Choose an accountant who will brainstorm ways to increase your income. My bookkeeper went through all my records, pointed out growth areas, and advised me on where to expand. Unlike the first accountant, she saw the money-making potential in blogging and was eager to help foster that growth.
Make sure the accountant you choose is available and responsive. You don’t want to wait for a week or more to get a response. Big firms may not be the best option since they can be too busy.
Many accountants still don’t fully appreciate the profitability of blogging and online work. So, it’s crucial for bloggers to find a professional who not only understands your work but also believes in your potential to make money and wants to help your business grow.
